5 Mistakes That Can Void Your HVAC Warranty

A technician explaining to a man about his new HVAC system

According to residential heating service providers, the warranty is important to your HVAC unit. After all, with a warranty, you can repair or replace your HVAC unit for free should issues arise. As such, it’s important that your unit’s warranty remains intact. However, if you aren’t careful, there are a few mistakes that you may make that can void your HVAC warranty.

1. Failure to provide regular maintenance documentation – When you maintain your HVAC unit, it’s important that you keep documentation of the maintenance procedure with you and store the documents in a secure location. This is because when you call on the warranty provider for service, you’ll need documentation to prove that you’ve been having the unit maintained on a regular basis. Without this documentation, your HVAC warranty could easily be voided.

2. Improper installation – If your home’s HVAC unit wasn’t properly installed, your warranty may be voided, as most warranties stipulate that installation must be done correctly. This is due to the fact that manufacturers can’t be held accountable for the issues that were caused by improper installation.

3. Failure to register the warranty to begin with – According to air conditioning contractors, you need to register your warranty after the HVAC unit has been installed, either online or by mailing in the paperwork. Unfortunately, most homeowners tend to put off the warranty registration until they forget to do it entirely, thus voiding the warranty altogether.

4. Using off-brand replacement parts – On the other hand, if you need to have any parts of your HVAC system replaced, it’s highly recommended that you only use parts from the original equipment manufacturer on the replacement project, as they’ve been thoroughly tested for compatibility and functionality. If you opt to use off-brand replacements, meanwhile, your HVAC warranty can be voided, forcing you to pay out-of-pocket if anything goes wrong with your unit.

5. Maintenance neglect – Finally, maintenance neglect can also result in a voided warranty. Remember: As the homeowner, it’s your responsibility to keep your HVAC unit in top condition, and as such, your manufacturer reserves the right to void your warranty if it sustains damage due to maintenance neglect.
