Answers to Frequently Asked Questions About Air Conditioning

Air conditioners do more than keep your home comfortable: they also circulate and filter air to remove indoor pollutants such as mold. If you suffer from allergies or asthma, your AC can provide relief by minimizing allergens and irritants that can trigger attacks.

Here are the answers to some of the most frequently-asked questions about air conditioners from trusted air conditioning contractors

Do I need to close my windows and doors when the AC is on?

Make sure you close all your windows and doors when the air conditioner is running. Leaving them open will allow conditioned air to escape, making your AC work harder than it should. This can strain the equipment and increase your energy costs.

How often do I need to have my AC serviced?

Experts recommend getting a residential air conditioning service at least once a year. It’s best to have your AC checked before the cooling season to ensure it stays efficient throughout the summer. As much as possible, don’t wait until summer to do this so you’ll be able to immediately use your AC when the temperatures start to rise.

When should I replace the AC filter?

Replace your AC filter every three months, or more frequently if you have allergies or asthma. Doing so will help improve your indoor air quality and prevent system breakdowns. Clogged air filters can make your AC less efficient, as they restrict airflow. Sometimes, not regularly replacing AC filters can even lead to a frozen evaporator coil.

How long will my air conditioner last?

When regularly maintained, your air conditioner can last for up to 15 years or more. If your AC is more than 15 years old and keeps experiencing issues, it’s usually more cost-effective to just get a new one rather than to have the existing one repaired.
