HVAC Features: How Recovery Mode Saves Energy

A person adjusting a new thermostat

If you’ve just installed a new HVAC system, you may not be familiar with the smart thermostat’s recovery mode feature. In this post, our residential heating repair contractors at Shackelford Heating elaborate on how recovery mode works and how it can help you save on electricity.

The Advantages of Using a Smart Thermostat

Recovery mode means your HVAC system is recovering from energy-saving mode. Unlike conventional thermostats, smart thermostats can be programmed to change the temperature at different intervals. You can program smart thermostats to raise or lower the temperature by the time you get home from work, maximizing indoor comfort. However, even an HVAC system with a smart thermostat isn’t exempt from a common problem among HVAC systems: increased strain on the HVAC system and greater electricity consumption.

How Recovery Mode Helps Conserve Electricity

If there’s a big difference between temperature settings, the load on the HVAC system increases and its electricity consumption spikes. Recovery mode ensures the load on the HVAC system remains even and prevents spikes in electricity consumption by gradually raising or lowering the temperature. For instance, if you set your smart thermostat to raise the temperature by 8:00 pm, an HVAC system in recovery mode will start doing so by 7:00 pm, an hour before the appointed time.

How to Prevent Your HVAC System From Going Into Recovery Mode

If you want to stop your HVAC system from going into recovery mode. try minimizing the difference between temperature settings by keeping  it within a range of five to seven degrees. If your smart thermostat allows more than two settings, you can program intermediate temperature ranges to avoid activating recovery mode.

How to Tell if Recovery Mode Was Triggered by a Malfunction

If you notice a spike in your electricity consumption despite your HVAC system constantly being in recovery mode, don’t hesitate to contact an HVAC and air conditioning repair service company. Uneven cooling and warming are also a warning sign.
